Water Softeners-An OverviewOriginally, water softening systems were developed for purification of well water. Today, due to increasing environmental pollution issues the popularity of water softening systems has risen and many households have installed these systems to solve their water problems. Water softening systems are usually big tanks that store and purify the hard water before it goes through a household’s plumbing system. The softener tank uses a resin component to soften the hard water by neutralizing the hardness causing minerals like calcium and magnesium through a process of ion exchange. The resin bed wears out in time and has to be regenerated frequently using a brine solution. Usually, salt or sodium chloride is used for regeneration. The frequency of regeneration can be controlled and depends on the hardness level of the water and the quantity of water consumed. The minerals that are flushed out during regeneration can be hazardous to our environment. Moreover, as the hardness causing ions are replaced by sodium ions softened water contains high levels of sodium. This is a big concern for people who are on low or no sodium diets. This problem can be solved by using the saltless water softener systems that use potassium chloride for the brine solution instead of sodium chloride. Water softeners using potassium salts can be significantly more expensive than the softeners using sodium for regeneration. Conventional whole house softening systems can be quite bulky and require a lot of space. Today, a huge variety of water softener systems are available in different shapes, sizes and capacities to fit individual needs. Small and compact water softening systems are available that require very little space. They are perfect for small apartments, houses or anywhere where there is shortage of space. These softeners are efficient, easy to install and maintain. Though small in size, these compact systems are fitted with almost all features that are found in the bigger and more elaborate water softening systems. Portable or RV water softening systems are also available for those who are on the go. Compact water softening systems are also available in salt and saltless versions for the convenience of consumers.
